Partner Description

ARMINES is a non-for-profit research organization founded in 1967. The relationship of ARMINES with French engineering and management schools is governed by agreements, under the supervision of the Ministries of Industry, Defense and Equipment. In line with the nature of partnership research, the operational unit (Subatech) is the joint research centre managed jointly by ARMINES and its partner engineering schools where each body provides personnel, investment and operating resources according to the volume of contractual activity. With a turnover of €44 million, ARMINES is the leading French Research and Technology Organization. ARMINES operates research contracts by the Laboratoire de Physique Subatomique et des Technologies Associées (SUBATECH – UMR 6457). SUBATECH is a joint research centre through ARMINES and Institut Mines Télécom Atlantique (IMTA).

Since January 1st, 2017, Institut Mines Telecom Atlantique (IMTA) brings together Ecole des Mines de Nantes and Telecom Bretagne, two higher education institutions in engineering. Its aim is academic excellence, with approximately 780 people organized in 13 Research Departments, (about 290 researchers and 300 Ph. D. Students) and about 1000 peer reviewed publications in key research fields published annually. Research efforts undertaken at IMTA cover a wide range of fields, from fundamental research to open society and industrial applicative research, with a special focus on technology transfer and communication to the general public.

The Department SUBATECH is a joint research unit (UMR 6457) operated especially by ARMINES, IMT Atlantique. The mission of Subatech is fundamental subatomic physics and associated technologies: Focus of the research and teaching programs is nuclear physics, nuclear medicine, environment and geological disposal of radioactive waste. Its Radiochemistry group is one of the few research groups worldwide having simultaneously experience in the field of high level radioactive waste forms like glass and spent fuel, performance of engineered barriers such as clay, cement, and concrete, considering as well the retention of radionuclides in the host rock of geological disposals.

Role in the Project

In the framework of the WP5, ARMINES (SUBATECH) will be performing computational atomistic modelling of cementitious materials and processes relevant to subsurface operations related to CCS and unconventional hydrocarbons technologies. In particular, physical and chemical aspects of the well casing behaviour in under subsurface conditions, including elevated pressures and temperatures, and potentially aggressive environment due to the effects of chemicals used in the fracking process, waste management, and generated during the carbon sequestration process via interaction of CO2 with underground brines, casing materials, and host rocks.

Team

With a PhD in Chemical Physics from the Russian Academy of Sciences, and over 20 years of experience with several major research institutions in Russia, Germany, USA, and France, Andrey KALINICHEV is currently one of the leading experts on atomistic computer simulations of the structure and properties of cementitious materials.

Sylvia MUTISYA holds a MS degree in Condensed Matter Physics from The Abdus Salaam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy, and will join the ARMINES/Subatech team in March 2018 after completing her PhD studies in Nanoscience and Advanced Materials at the Universidade Federal do ABC, Santo André, São Paulo, Brazil, focusing on atomistic simulations of water confined in cement.
