Partner Description

Reykjavik Energy is a public utility company providing electricity, geothermal water for heating, and cold water for consumption and firefighting. The service area extends to 20 municipalities, covering 67% of the Icelandic population. Reykjavík Energy‘s principal owner is the City of Reykjavík, and it provides its services through three subsidiaries; Veitur Utilities, ON Power and Reykjavík Fibre Network. The group harnesses hot water from geothermal fields in Reykjavík and operates geothermal plants at Hellisheidi and Nesjavellir where electricity and hot water is generated. Potable water is distributed from groundwater reservoirs and the group‘s waste-water services meet wide environmental requirements.

Role in the Project

Reykjavik Energy has since 2007 been involved in development, testing and demonstration of a full CCS cycle at one of its power plants (CarbFix) which has since then been extended to industrial scale. Currently one third of CO2 and H2S emissions from the Hellisheidi power plant are captured and re-injected into the subsurface. Reykjavik Energy has demonstrated the ability to transfer an idea to a fully integrated and economical CCS system, requiring minimum maintenance and power consumption in active collaboration with academia and at the same time provided the training ground for several ESRs.

Reykjavik Energy operates:

  1. An extensive integrated network to monitor its CCS and geothermal operations. An on-line (open access) micro-seismic network is operated tracking induced seismicity due to re-injection of fluids from the power conversion processes.
  2. A high resolution data collection system of process flows enabling coupling of production/injection data to seismic data.
  3. In collaboration with environmental authorities, an extensive monitoring program of atmospheric quality where data is collected both with the aid of stationary measurement stations as well as extensive geospatial measurement campaigns of soil flux measurements and atmosphere measurements feeding air circulation models operated mainly by subcontractors.
  4. An extensive chemical monitoring network covering production wells, process flows and groundwater monitoring wells. Reykjavik Energy has expertise in downhole and surface measurements/interpretation chemical and physical parameters.
  5. An in-house reservoir model (TOUGH) able to simulate the complete geothermal system as well as more detailed sub-models incorporating chemistry for simulating CO2 mineral storage (TOUGHREACT).

Edda S. P. Aradóttir (chemist and reservoir Engineer, Ph.D) has been the project manager of CarbFix since 2011 and has as such managed all aspects of ongoing research and activities at Hellisheidi geothermal power plant, where a full, industrial scale CCS loop has been operated since 2014.

Sandra Ó Snæbjörnsdóttir (geologist, Ph.D) managed the chemical monitoring and reaction progress modelling of water-rock-gas interactions during the pilot injections of the CarbFix project. She is currently involved with the monitoring of the CarbFix site, including chemical monitoring and tracer injection.

Bergur Sigfússon (geochemist, Ph.D) oversaw the field scale commissioning of the Carbfix project, including the development of the CO2 capture process and installation and testing of the re-injection apparatus and monitoring system. He manages the monitoring of the whole CCS cycle of the CarbFix injection.

Gunnar Gunnarsson (reservoir engineer, Ph.D) has an extensive knowledge and expertise in numerical reservoir modelling and has furthermore been involved with studying induced seismicity due to injection of waste water from OR’s power plants. His involvement in S4CE is mostly related to seismic monitoring of the injection site.
